What to do after a Charleston accident

Three things to handle after a crash — get your report, get checked out, and protect your claim. Here is exactly who to contact, by area of the Charleston region.

In South Carolina, your official crash report isn't kept by the police — it's filed with the SC Department of Motor Vehicles. You can request a copy from the SCDMV yourself (Form FR-50, $10), or skip the paperwork and let us retrieve it for you at no cost. The department that responded to your crash is listed below by area — that's who to call with questions about the scene or the officer's incident report. Crashes on I-26, I-526, and other highways are handled by SC Highway Patrol.

Charleston accident questions

Straight answers to what Charleston-area accident victims ask us most.

In South Carolina, the official crash report is filed with the SC Department of Motor Vehicles — not the police department that responded. You can request a copy from the SCDMV with Form FR-50, online or by mail or in person, for a $10 fee. Or let AccidentBureau retrieve it for you at no cost.
Where the crash happened decides which agency responded — Charleston Police, North Charleston, Mount Pleasant, one of the county sheriff's offices, or SC Highway Patrol on the interstates. The section above lists each one by area. Whichever agency responded, the official report copy still comes from the SC DMV.
Usually not. The large majority of Charleston-area injury claims settle directly with the at-fault driver's insurer and never reach a courtroom. If a fair settlement can't be reached, a lawsuit is filed in the Court of Common Pleas for the county where the crash happened — Charleston, Berkeley, or Dorchester.
Crashes on the interstates and major highways across the tri-county area are typically worked by SC Highway Patrol rather than a city police department. The report is still filed with, and requested from, the SC DMV. The I-26 corridor — especially the I-526 interchange and Ashley Phosphate Road — is among the highest-crash areas in the Lowcountry.
The SC DMV charges $10 for a copy of a collision report (Form FR-50), whether you order it online, by mail, or in person. When AccidentBureau retrieves your report, we cover that fee — it's free for accident victims.
